É uma tabela estática de consulta: cada linha associa uma extensão de arquivo ao valor Content-Type (tipo MIME) que um servidor web envia para ela. A página não tem campo de entrada nem script próprio, então os valores fazem parte do documento que o navegador renderiza.

A tabela repetia linhas que davam a uma mesma extensão dois valores diferentes: .jpg, .png, .tif, .xls, .ppt, .vsd, .vst, .ico, .jpe, .ps, .eps, .mdb, .dwf e .pdf apareciam duas vezes, e .tif três vezes. Agora cada extensão aparece uma única vez, e foi removida uma linha que listava a extensão «.» com o valor cortado application/x-.
Os valores de formatos muito usados foram corrigidos com o mapeamento do nginx e com a base mimetypes do Python: .js, .mp3, .mp4, .svg, .bmp, .avi, .rtf, .xhtml e .m3u agora trazem text/javascript, audio/mpeg, video/mp4, image/svg+xml, image/bmp, video/x-msvideo, application/rtf, application/xhtml+xml e audio/x-mpegurl. .class e .java mostravam o marcador java/* e agora mostram application/java-vm e text/x-java-source.
Foram incluídas quarenta e quatro extensões que a lista antiga não cobria, entre elas .json, .zip, .gz, .csv, .md, .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, .odt, .epub, .webp, .avif, .heic, .woff, .woff2, .wasm, .yaml e .webmanifest. Os valores vêm do arquivo mime.types do nginx e da base mimetypes do Python; quando os dois não trazem nada, usa-se o tipo registrado na IANA, como text/markdown para .md, application/yaml para .yaml e .yml, e application/ld+json para .jsonld. No total, a tabela lista 372 entradas.
As entradas históricas da lista antiga foram mantidas, porque extensões como .wk4 ou .wq1 ainda aparecem em logs de servidor e arquivos de configuração. Essas linhas mostram a grafia importada, então os valores com prefixo x- devem ser lidos como legado.
O cabeçalho Content-Type é decidido pelo servidor, não pelo arquivo: o mesmo .txt pode ser enviado como text/plain ou como application/octet-stream conforme a configuração, e o navegador pode ignorar o cabeçalho quando reconhece o conteúdo sozinho.
Use a tabela para consultar e para escrever configuração, e depois verifique os cabeçalhos da resposta para saber o que é enviado de fato. Para inspecionar um arquivo que você já tem, o detector de MIME e assinatura de arquivo deste site lê os primeiros bytes e indica o tipo provável.
