Das ist eine statische Nachschlagetabelle: Jede Zeile stellt eine Dateiendung dem Content-Type-Wert (MIME-Typ) gegenüber, den ein Webserver dafür sendet. Die Seite hat kein Eingabefeld und kein eigenes Skript, die Werte gehören also zum Dokument, das der Browser darstellt.
Jede Zeile enthält eine Endung und den Content-Type-Wert, den ein Server dafür sendet. Die Endungsspalte behält den führenden Punkt, und die erste Zeile deckt Dateien mit unbekanntem Typ ab: Sie werden als application/octet-stream ausgeliefert.
Die Tabelle wiederholte Zeilen, die einer Endung zwei verschiedene Werte gaben: .jpg, .png, .tif, .xls, .ppt, .vsd, .vst, .ico, .jpe, .ps, .eps, .mdb, .dwf und .pdf standen zweimal darin, .tif sogar dreimal. Nun kommt jede Endung genau einmal vor, und eine Zeile mit der Endung „.“ und dem abgeschnittenen Wert application/x- wurde entfernt.
Die Werte viel genutzter Formate wurden anhand der nginx-Zuordnung und der mimetypes-Datenbank von Python korrigiert: .js, .mp3, .mp4, .svg, .bmp, .avi, .rtf, .xhtml und .m3u nennen jetzt text/javascript, audio/mpeg, video/mp4, image/svg+xml, image/bmp, video/x-msvideo, application/rtf, application/xhtml+xml und audio/x-mpegurl. Bei .class und .java stand der Platzhalter java/*, dort stehen nun application/java-vm und text/x-java-source.
Vierundvierzig Endungen, die die alte Liste nicht abdeckte, sind hinzugekommen, darunter .json, .zip, .gz, .csv, .md, .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, .odt, .epub, .webp, .avif, .heic, .woff, .woff2, .wasm, .yaml und .webmanifest. Ihre Werte stammen aus der mime.types-Datei von nginx und aus der mimetypes-Datenbank von Python; wo beide schweigen, steht der bei der IANA registrierte Typ, etwa text/markdown für .md, application/yaml für .yaml und .yml sowie application/ld+json für .jsonld. Insgesamt listet die Tabelle 372 Einträge.
Historische Einträge der alten Liste blieben erhalten, weil Endungen wie .wk4 oder .wq1 weiterhin in Server-Logs und Konfigurationsdateien auftauchen. Diese Zeilen zeigen die importierte Schreibweise; Werte mit x-Präfix sind daher als Altbestand zu lesen.
Über den Content-Type-Header entscheidet der Server, nicht die Datei: Dieselbe .txt kann je nach Konfiguration als text/plain oder als application/octet-stream gesendet werden, und ein Browser darf den Header ignorieren, wenn er den Inhalt selbst erkennt.
